Event description:

This conference aims to complicate conventional timelines and historiography in order to provoke debate about the continuity and rupture of social, political, and labor forms in the hemisphere during the nineteenth century. It seeks, furthermore, to pause, consider, and interrogate the distortions wrought by nationally-framed accounts, even as it also recognizes claims-making and citizenship discourses in and beyond the nation. Finally, by highlighting phenomena such as the end of slavery, local and transnational competing sources of sovereignty, migration, war, and rights, it seeks to foster discussion of new modes of interpretation about time, memory, territory, justice, and identity across regions and decades.
