Bio:

Liana DeMarco is a PhD candidate in the History of Science and History of Medicine program where she focuses on the history of medicine and environmental history in the Americas. Her work traces embodied experiences of slavery, capitalism, imperialism, and environmental change with emphasis on the ways that these experiences are mediated by race and class. She also draws on biopolitical theory, critical race theory, and environmental humanities perspectives to demonstrate how health and labor norms have changed over time. She completed qualifying exam fields in the history of medicine in North America since 1600; biopolitics and public health since 1800; environmental history; and modern Latin America. Her dissertation project examines the role of medicine and environmental thinking in the making of racial capitalism in antebellum Louisiana and late colonial Cuba.
