Conceptualizing the “Age of Democratic Revolutions” led by David A. Bell, Sidney and Ruth Lapidus Professor, Department of History, Princeton University

What does it mean to talk about ‘Atlantic Revolutions’? Professor Bell will examine how the concept has been formulated since the days of R.R. Palmer and consider the ways in which it is, and is not useful for historians of the period. 

Conference: Institutions and Development in Latin America and the Caribbean: Historical and Contemporary Issues

The Program in Economic History at Yale University is holding a mini-conference on “Institutions and Development in Latin America and the Caribbean: Historical and Contemporary Issues.” The conference begins at 1pm on Friday, October 14, and runs through mid-afternoon on Saturday.

Paul Freedman was having lunch at Delmonico’s — not the original, which opened in the early 19th century, but a relic of it in the financial district. Lobster Newburg was still on the menu, the meat napped with a brandy-spiked butter.

“But the sauce used to have much, much more brandy in it,” Mr. Freedman said. “The style now is less severe.”
