At a recent global investment event in Riyadh, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman announced his plans to build a global megacity, NEOM, on the northwestern coast of Saudi Arabia over the next 10 years. To increase investor confidence in the kingdom, he reassured the world that Saudis want to “return to a moderate Islam that had existed in the country prior to 1979.”

Jean-Christophe Agnew is the 2017 winner of the ASA’s Mary C. Turpie Prize, which recognizes “outstanding achievement in American Studies teaching, advising, and program development.”  The prize will be awarded at the American Studies Association awards ceremony on Friday, November 10, 2017 at the Hyatt Regency Chicago.

One hundred years ago today, Vladimir Lenin’s Bolsheviks took power in Russia, only eight months after Czar Nicholas II had abdicated the throne amid a popular uprising and soldier mutiny. One of the earliest acts of Lenin’s new regime was to murder Nicholas, as well as his wife and children.
