Greetings History Majors,
Welcome back!
I hope you’re excited for the semester. There couldn’t be a better time to ask big questions about the past.
This fall, we have new professors bringing their brilliance to the department and new courses to offer.
For example, do you know an intrepid first year who is looking for how to better understand the history of the world through the prism of a single bean? Make sure to recommend to them a new first-year seminar: Empires of Coffee, taught by Professor Azarbadegan. There’s also a co-taught gem of a lecture, HIST 1788, in which Professors Mikhail and Muhammad explore Islam, and imaginaries about Islam, in North America across more than three centuries. And many more!
Our brilliant majors are also beginning new projects. Jeth Fogg YC ’27 and Zach Suri YC ’27 have founded a new journal in collaboration with Professors Magaziner and Nakhimovsky, The Yale Undergraduate Journal of Intellectual History. Have you produced historical writing that you want to find a home in print? Submissions are welcome from all Yale undergraduates from 10 to 30 pages, following Chicago citation guidelines. If you have questions, are interested in submitting an essay, or joining our editorial team, please contact Jeth at jeth.fogg@yale.edu. Submissions for the inaugural Spring 2027 edition are due by October 26, 2026.
Finally, are you on track with your planned progress for courses? A great resource to help finalize your schedules is the Course Demand Statistics website. You can see current enrollments in each course. As a reminder, every major needs to take two 3000-level departmental seminars. 2000 level seminars do not satisfy this requirement.
