Richard Velázquez Perales is a first-year Ph.D. student in the Department of History. He is primarily concerned with the ideas of race, indigeneity, and mestizaje in the Bajío region of Mexico. More specifically, he investigates the processes of indigenous assimilation and the creation of the mestizo identity. Displacement of indigenous peoples and the creation of new identities throughout the colonial period also command his attention.
Richard Velázquez Perales graduated from the University of North Texas in 2014 with a B.A. in History, International Studies, and Spanish. He also holds an M.A. in Latin American History from the University of Oregon.
