Thomas Monaghan
Bio:
Tom Monaghan is a PhD candidate in history. His research examines sugar and island societies in Japan and the Ryukyu archipelago in the early modern to Meiji periods, with a particular focus on the Amami Islands. Examining changes in technology, labour, and the environment, his research draws connections between Japan’s sugar history and that of the Atlantic world.
He grew up in Taunton, UK, and has studied at the University of Edinburgh, SOAS (London), Salamanca University (Spain), and Tokyo University. He also spent two years as an Assistant Language Teacher at Naoshima Junior High School in western Japan.
