African and African Diaspora History Working Group

The African and African Diaspora History Working Group at the Department of History, Yale University brings together scholars interested in the continent’s history, as well as those working on histories of the long, contested and interwoven relationship between the continent and peoples of African descent worldwide. With support from the Dean of Humanities and the Council on African Studies, the AADHWG provides space for graduate students, faculty, alumni and scholars both within and beyond New Haven and Connecticut to workshop their works in progress, in a collegial, informal, and rigorous setting. The AADHWG is especially interested in cultivating and supporting innovative scholarship that uses interdisciplinary and heterodox methodologies, as well as considers underexplored aspects of African and Diasporic experience. We invite participation from scholars affiliated with African Studies, Diaspora Studies and other departments who are doing work oriented around the past, as well as from interested undergraduates and graduate students looking to workshop prospectuses, draft articles and other materials, up to and including unpublished book manuscripts.

The Working Group meets at least four times per semester. Interested students and faculty are encouraged to reach out to Kate Sandlin (kate.sandlin@yale.edu) and Louise Umutoni (louise.umutoni@yale.edu) for more information.
