The Workshop in Modern U.S. History meets once per month to discuss works in progress by leading scholars in 20th-century U.S. history. The workshop is open to all graduate students and faculty. Sponsored by professors Beverly Gage and Elizabeth Hinton.
We invite current graduate students with special interest in U.S. History to apply to become 2026-2027 graduate fellows of the Workshop in Modern U.S. History. The workshop meets once per month, 4-5:30 pm, usually on the final Thursday of the month. We will launch this year’s workshop on Thursday, October 1, with a lecture by Kelly Lytle Hernandez (UCLA), to be followed by a welcome reception. The full schedule for 2026-2027 is below.
All graduate students are welcome to attend and participate in workshop sessions. Those selected as graduate fellows make an additional commitment to attend all seven workshop sessions and take a leading role in interchange with the visiting scholars (attending dinners, serving as commenters, etc.).
Students interested in participating as graduate fellows should send a brief paragraph outlining relevant background and interest in the workshop to beverly.gage@yale.edu and elizabeth.hinton@yale.edu no later than Tuesday, September 8. Students who have previously participated as graduate fellows are welcome to reapply. The fellowship program is open to all Ph.D. and M.A. Students in History and related disciplines, including those in the first year of study.
